Breast implants contain either saline liquid or silicone gel. Saline implants are inflated with a sterile saline solution after the implant has been positioned in the chest. Because of their smooth, pliable silicone exterior, saline devices move relatively freely within the implant pocket, giving the breast more natural-looking movement. They come in a wide range of sizes but only one shape, round. If a saline implant develops a leak, the body absorbs the sterile saline solution. Because the device deflates when it ruptures, most patients can easily detect this occurrence and schedule an appointment to resolve the problem. Saline breast implants, FDA approved for use in individuals 18 or older, are appropriate for most patients.
Silicone implants are pre-filled with a silicone gel, though the viscosity of this gel varies among implant manufacturers and products. The feel of traditional silicone breast implants closely resembles that of actual breast tissue, and these devices come in round or teardrop shapes and a wide range of sizes. Silicone implants also have the advantage that they are less likely to cause rippling over time.
The latest form-stable, cohesive-gel products, called gummy bear breast implants, feel firmer and maintain their shape, even when a woman is lying on her back. They have a textured rather than smooth exterior to help stabilize them once they have been positioned in the chest pocket. If a silicone device develops a leak, its interior gel will either remain inside the shell or leak slowly into the chest pocket. For this reason, patients who choose silicone breast implants must visit their plastic surgeon for regular follow-up visits to monitor their devices. Silicone breast implants are FDA approved for use in individuals 22 or older; they are appropriate for patients with specific needs.
Breast implants are available in round or teardrop shapes. Round implants offer a uniform look and feel, so they can make breasts look fuller, especially at the top, or upper pole. They work well for patients who prefer a high profile and significant projection from the chest wall. For those who prefer a natural-looking breast shape, anatomical teardrop silicone or gummy bear breast implants help achieve this goal. They have greater volume at the bottom, which tapers off toward the top, more closely resembling a natural breast shape.
