WHAT ARE MIGRAINES?

Migraine surgery addresses a neurological disorder associated with various common symptoms, including recurring moderate to intense headaches, nausea, weakness, loss of vision, and sensitivity to light or sound. A chronic medical condition, migraines often cause throbbing or pulsing on the side of the head. The pain can last for a duration of a few hours to days at a time.

While researchers have yet to identify an exact cause for migraines, the symptoms are believed to be associated with abnormal activity in the brain that results in inflammation of the blood vessels. Women, people with a family history of migraines, and those between the ages of 15 and 55 are more susceptible to migraines. Some of the most common triggers are lack of sleep, skipped meals, hormonal fluctuations, weather changes, alcohol, and foods containing nitrates, MSG, tyramine, or Aspartame.

WHY USE SURGERY TO TREAT A MIGRAINE HEADACHE?

*Individual patient results may vary.

For individuals who have not experienced pain relief through traditional means—behavior modification, over-the-counter or prescription medications, or neuromodulation—migraine surgery may provide long-term relief from their chronic, debilitating symptoms. These symptoms often prevent them from working or attending school, and they can impair their ability to perform even simple, everyday tasks.

Migraines that occur with any regularity can upend a person's life, adversely affecting employment, mental health, and interpersonal relationships. Migraine surgery has been shown to significantly improve functioning and coping for patients.

MIGRAINE SURGERY IN LONG ISLAND CAN BRING LONG-TERM RELIEF FROM CHRONIC HEADACHES

Migraine surgery is based on the belief that these specific headaches are caused by compressed peripheral sensory nerves that run along the outer skull. Surgery aims to decompress these nerves and release the specific headache trigger points, without affecting the skull bones or brain. Pressure points can occur anywhere on the head and neck, but common trigger sites include the forehead, temples, around the eyes, inside the nose, and the back of the head.

The techniques used are similar to those applied in facial plastic surgery treatments. Surgery should be considered as an option only after a patient has exhausted all other non-invasive, traditional treatment modalities. Migraine surgery is designed as a one-time procedure and is believed to have the benefit of reducing the need for medication, as well as the frequency, duration, and severity of headaches. It can even completely prevent them from occurring in some cases.

MIGRAINE SURGERY PATIENT HISTORY AND SELECTION CRITERIA

Migraine surgery isn’t a solution for everyone, and there’s no way to guarantee that all patients will have favourable results from the procedure. Dr. Alizadeh uses strict selection criteria to determine which patients would benefit from, and be optimal candidates for, migraine surgery. During your consultation, you will be asked the following kinds of questions:

  • How long have you been experiencing migraines?
  • How often do they occur, and how long do they last?
  • How severe are your headaches?
  • In what ways do your headaches interfere with your life?
  • Have you identified specific headache triggers?
  • How do you respond to medications?
  • Have your migraines decreased with BOTOX® injections?

Based on your answers to these questions, Dr. Alizadeh will help you determine the appropriate course of action. If he believes you are a candidate for migraine surgery, he will explain in detail the procedure, what to expect from recovery, and any potential risks.
