What is Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation?

To achieve the curving, feminine figure you desire, fat transfer breast augmentation uses your own fat, harvested from another part of your body. Any area of the body that has excess fat can be a harvest site. The added benefit of this procedure is the slimming effect of the liposuction in the area you choose to harvest from, such as the abdomen, thighs or bottom. The fat is gently suctioned out by liposuction, cleansed and purified, then transferred into the breasts to create a naturally attractive, larger shape.

Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation Procedure

Consultation

We start with a thoughtful, complete consultation with Dr. Alizadeh. He will examine you, review your medical history, hear your concerns and discuss your aesthetic goals for your breasts. Dr. Alizadeh will walk you through the details of the procedure to ensure you know what to expect, and he will answer any questions.

During your consultation, you will decide with Dr. Alizadeh which part of your body you would like to have the fat harvested from. Dr. Alizadeh will be able to help advise where the best places might be to help you achieve a contoured figure that will compliment your new breasts. Common areas are the bra rolls, thighs, and abdomen, but other areas may also be chosen.

Preparing for Surgery

Within two weeks of your surgery, stop taking any vitamins, herbal supplements or drugs that could thin the blood, including aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs.

If you smoke, it is important to quit at least a week before your surgery. Smoking decreases blood flow and impairs healing, and it also weakens the immune system, thus increasing the chance of potential infection.

Procedure

Your surgery will begin with fat harvesting. Fat will be gently removed from the harvest site, with extreme care being taken not to damage the fat cells. This gives the cells a greater chance of survival once they are transferred. Next, the fat cells will be cleansed and purified, either in a centrifuge or by straining them. This part of the process ensures that only the most viable fat cells remain for transfer into the breasts, again giving them a higher chance of remaining and thriving there.

Dr. Alizadeh will next inject the purified fat into your breasts in specific amounts and locations. This will be done precisely in order to create ideal symmetry, and rounder, larger breasts. Immediately, your breasts will be plumper and fuller.

Recovery

After the procedure, you will have compression bandages around your breasts and fat donor site. The compression bandage helps prevent swelling and also supports the shape of your new breasts.

Your recovery time will vary depending on which donor areas you chose for fat harvest, as different areas respond differently to liposuction. On average, patients tend to spend 1-2 days recovering and resting, and return to work within a week. Wait 3-6 weeks before you return to strenuous activity of any kind.

How long will the results last?

Not all of the fat cells that are transferred will remain in the breasts. Your body may eventually absorb some of the fat in the first few weeks after the procedure. While this is expected and compensated for during the initial procedure itself by slightly overfilling the breasts, some patients prefer to return for a follow-up to achieve greater volume.

Once a month has passed, the amount of fat in your breasts from the procedure will have fully stabilized, meaning it will not decrease. However, the results depend on maintaining your current weight. If you lose significant weight, the size of your breasts may decrease. If you gain weight, your breasts may increase.

Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation FAQs

How much fat survives after transfer to the breasts?

Not all transferred fat will remain long term. On average, about 60–80% of the fat survives, while the rest is naturally absorbed by the body in the first few months.

Can fat transfer breast augmentation be repeated?

Yes. Some patients choose a second session to increase volume further or refine results once the initial fat has stabilized.

Is fat transfer breast augmentation safer than implants?

Fat transfer avoids implant-related risks such as rupture or capsular contracture, but it is still a surgical procedure with its own considerations. The best option depends on your anatomy and goals.

Will fat transfer affect future breast imaging or mammograms?

Fat transfer can cause small calcifications in the breast, but these are typically distinguishable from concerning findings. It’s important to inform your radiologist about your procedure history.

Does fat transfer leave scars?

Scarring is minimal. Liposuction and injection points are very small and typically heal with little to no visible marks.

Can this procedure correct significant asymmetry?

Yes, fat transfer is especially useful for improving mild to moderate asymmetry by precisely adding volume where needed.

Is there a minimum amount of body fat required?

Yes. Patients need enough donor fat to harvest and transfer effectively, which is why very lean individuals may not be ideal candidates.
