Mission: Restore has chosen to travel to places where most doctors would not go, to conduct the types of surgeries that most doctors would prefer not to perform. The Foundation is comprised of doctors who volunteer their time and expertise at home and abroad. Our overarching goal is to create a sustainable infrastructure that enables us to forge long-term relationships and effect permanent change. When it is too difficult for Mission: Restore volunteer surgeons to travel to war-torn countries, we redirect our efforts to help patients in the United States.

Our work centers around the following three areas:

  • Surgical Training Missions: In-person training with top US surgeon educators
  • Surgical Training Grants: Ongoing support for community-minded, promising young doctors
  • Telemedicine: Ongoing consultation, mentoring of medical volunteers for Mission Restore and monitoring of outcomes

Our Process

3 Months

Conduct needs assessment:

  • Select countries with a disproportionate ratio between population and number of surgeons to attend to needs
  • Identify local surgeons and local hospital partners
  • Ensure appropriate infrastructure
  • Select volunteer Mission: Restore team members

6 Months

Complete an exploratory visit:

  • Gain commitment of local surgeons
  • Gain commitment of local hospital(s)
  • Meet with Ministry of Health and complete Memorandum of Understanding
  • Develop relationship with key community leaders

36 Months

Participate in training and mentoring programs:

  • Visiting surgeons train local physicians while performing surgery
  • Conduct weekly didactic Skype conferences with local surgeons
  • Organize fellowship program in US for local surgeons
  • Provide training materials for local surgeons

Each program is designed with an understanding of the culture, the healthcare delivery system, and the prevailing medical needs of each country. These cases are then assigned to a Mission: Restore team based on specializations such as craniosynostosis, large palatal fistulas, large facial tumors, massive facial defects, complex hand trauma, multilevel burn contractures, and congenital defects.

A critical component of Mission: Restore's medical and surgical training program is the use of telemedicine. Mission: Restore volunteer surgeons conduct Skype sessions with our partners. The use of technology enables our team to assist doctors with complex cases between official Mission: Restore trips.
