Smart™ Laser Lipo: Laser-assisted Liposuction

SMART™ laser-assisted liposuction, also known commonly as "laser lipo," is a minimally invasive procedure that uses laser energy to destroy fat cells. Also called "laser lipolysis," SMART™ laser lipo successfully treats small, isolated pockets of fat that occur in and around loose skin.

Common treatment areas include:

  • Neck or jowls
  • Knees
  • Stomach
  • Back
  • Along the bra line

Laser lipolysis may cause less bleeding than traditional tumescent liposuction, and it also may stimulate collagen production, helping reduce skin laxity and increase firmness and overall appearance. Cosmoplastic Surgery patients report that, compared to tumescent liposuction, SMART™ laser lipo promotes less bruising and a faster recovery time.

Vaserlipo® System

The VASERlipo® System is ideal for our NYC patients who wish to enhance the visibility of underlying muscles for a sculpted, athletic, toned aesthetic. VASERlipo® uses minimally invasive ultrasound technology to precisely target the fat that surrounds muscle tissue. Compared to conventional liposuction, which removes only deep parts of the fatty tissue, VASERlipo® addresses both deep and superficial fat to give clear definition to visible muscles. During the VASERlipo® procedure, undesired fatty tissue is gently dislodged with ultrasound energy and then aspirated. Just one VASERlipo® treatment session can help you achieve head-turning results.

What To Expect During Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction is performed as an outpatient procedure under local or general anesthesia. Dr. Alizadeh will help you determine the proper approach based on your clinical needs. Most standalone liposuction procedures require two to five hours depending on the number and complexity of treatment areas.

For standalone liposuction in Long Island, Dr. Alizadeh creates a small incision in the target area, through which he inserts a cannula, or narrow tube. Then, using the specific type of liposuction selected, he will gently dislodge the undesired fat and then suction it from the body.

For patients undergoing HydraSolve® Liposuction with NaturaGlow® Fat Transfer, Dr. Alizadeh will process the extracted adipose tissue and prepare it for reinjection into the target areas. The gently preserved fat allows for the regenerative cells within it to survive and thrive in the newly transplanted area. A patient may receive many tiny fat injections at different depths to achieve optimal results. Learn more about NaturaGlow® Fat Transfer here

Once complete, liposuction incisions are closed with absorbable sutures or surgical glue.

What To Expect From Liposuction Recovery

Following your liposuction procedure, you should experience minimal bruising or pain and can expect to return to work in a few days and normal physical activities within two weeks. You will be expected to wear pressure garments to help minimize the swelling and maximize the results of your procedure, which will continue to improve with time, peaking within six to 12 weeks. Dr. Alizadeh and his staff at Cosmoplastic Surgery will provide detailed pre- and post-surgery instructions prior to your liposuction procedure so you know exactly what to expect.

Maintaining Liposuction Results

Healthy eating and exercise are important for preserving good health, but they are also key to maintaining the results of liposuction surgery. Though fat cells removed via cannula are gone for good, the body can still grow other fat cells larger if given the opportunity, possibly leading to bulges in new areas.

The best way to enjoy the results of liposuction long term is to continue to make lifestyle choices that keep weight gain at bay.

Beyond Liposuction: Further Contouring Options

  • For patients who specifically want to address the excess fat that causes a double chin, but who are not ready to commit to surgery, there is a nonsurgical solution in Kybella®. This FDA-approved injectable uses a form of deoxycholic acid—a key component in the digestive process—to disrupt fat cells and free the lipids for processing.
  • Small amounts of loose skin that cause slight bagginess and wrinkles can be addressed with laser skin tightening, which is typically applied to the face, neck, and chest.
  • Some patients may have a flabby look due not to excess pockets of fat, but rather to the presence of loose, baggy skin. In these cases, liposuction may serve to remove some lingering fat cells for refinement purposes, but the actual problem must be solved by excising the redundant skin with a lift or tuck. Dr. Alizadeh offers a range of procedures to address sagging and more, including surgery to correct:
    • Gynecomastia (the development of male breasts)
    • Drooping female breasts
    • A flabby belly
    • Loose skin on the upper arms or legs
    • Flat buttocks

Any of these procedures can be performed standalone as needed, though patients who have lost significant amounts of weight often find that some or all of the procedures are necessary to address excess skin found all over the body. A body lift after major weight loss is a common choice.

Fat Transfer – From Fat To Filler

Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, is a way to allow a patient's own body to be the source of cosmetic improvement. Because fat cells are merely moving from one area of the body to another, they are not treated as a foreign object or substance in the way that some fillers or implants may be, making them ideal for natural-looking and long-lasting rejuvenation.

The liposuction necessary for this procedure may be used strictly for harvesting healthy fat cells from a site where they are found in abundance, or it may be intended to slim down the donor site. Either way, the gently collected fat cells are prime candidates for adding volume, whether it is a small, subtle amount to the lips, or a larger amount to the buttocks, or other areas that could use a boost to create a more youthful roundness.

Fat transfer is also ideal for some patients undergoing breast reconstruction, as the cells create added volume from a substance already naturally found in the breasts. These cells can be used to refine an already reconstructed breast, helping it to more closely match the other breast in shape and size. They can also be used to rebuild an entire breast mound—an option more commonly chosen by women who have naturally smaller breasts.

The Nuances Of Anatomy – How Fat Cells Work

There is a common misconception that slimming down is the result of the body getting rid of fat cells by using them for energy when more calories are spent than eaten. Actually, the number of fat cells is essentially fixed for adults. Diet and exercise can cause fat cells to shrink—thereby causing the areas where they are found to shrink, too—but they are not destroyed. The fat content of the cells is broken down and expelled through natural elimination and respiration processes, but the cells themselves remain. Cells that have shrunk are free to grow again under the right conditions. This means that as the cells expand, so too will the areas where they are found, whether in the abdomen, the buttocks, the upper arms, or under the chin.

Fat reduction with significant, lasting results is possible with the destruction or removal of the cells. The membranes may be destroyed manually, chemically, or by freezing, freeing the lipids inside to be processed by the body. Or the cells may be loosened from their fixed positions and suctioned out through an incision, as with the various forms of liposuction.

The science of fat is still being studied by medical professionals and researchers, with the goal of achieving a new understanding of how it works in order to better manipulate it for health and cosmetic benefits.

As noted elsewhere, though liposuction removes fat cells from the body so that they can no longer impact an area by growing or shrinking, the procedure is intended solely for body contouring. The surgery is not considered a weight-loss method.

Patients interested in losing a significant amount of weight should speak with their primary care physician to determine the best strategy, whether it's a focused plan of diet and exercise or a modern surgical procedure designed to inhibit caloric intake.
